Sad News

APOO: I am very sad to announce the possible ending of this short-lived blog. DMSC has just gave notice that with the bad economy, he cannot afford to eat out every Friday anymore. I guess that is the case for a lot of people too, including me. However, I cannot help but think that maybe DMSC doesn't like IG and I anymore and decided to split (and I am not joking, I really think that). This sad news has come with several others that are all making my day more and more gloomy. I am even contemplating on leaving work now...yes, I get emotional sometimes.

For me, there is one reason why canceling Friday lunch is most saddening and it has nothing to do with not having anything to look forward to every week. You see, the three of us barely talk at work during the week. Friday lunch is a time for us to spill all our frustrations and other matters we experience during the week, work or non-work related. In a way, our friendship builds upon every interesting or boring conversation we have during these lunches. Without them, I am afraid our bond will slowly fade. It's just like not being best friends with your old roommate anymore. Now that I have expressed how special these lunches mean to me, I am a little angry that it ended so quickly, literally in three sentences. [shaking fist...GRRR!!!]

Green Door Cafe

1145 Maunakea St
Honolulu, HI 96817
(808) 533-0606

IG: Guess what guys??? I'M BAACK!!! I found my login name and password to get back in to this account. YEA!! Aren't you guys glad?? I had read in the papers that the Green Door in Kahala Mall had closed and was moving back to Chinatown.
APOO called the GD this morning, talked to the Betty (the owner and chef) and learned that the GD was open for lunch.

APOO: I heard from my friends that the owner/chef is sorta' mean. I was scared to call but I did anyway. Then we both got confused because I thought she was in Waialae, and Robert said she was in Kahala. BUT, she moved to downtown and kept the same phone number as before. So confusing!
DMSC: We stopped by this place a few weeks ago, but the Green Door was closed (literally). Today it was open. When we first walked in, we were surprised that there were only like 4 small tables with 3 seats each.

DMSC: There's no printed menu. There's a menu on the counter, printed on a chalkboard. There were only three dishes today. The interior of the restaurant was red, with the green door in the front. Very bold and striking colors.
APOO: I love green and I really wanted to take the door home. Then I realized it would be much easier to go buy green paint and paint all my doors green :)

APOO: These red lanterns were hovering over our heads in the restaurant. There are many artistic elements in this tiny restaurant that make it work. The bold colors of red and green just open your eyes. The large lanterns in a small space create a centerpiece that is conspicuous and makes everything fit together.

APOO: What you see is what you get! A small kitchen and one chef that create very delicious food.

DMSC: We each ordered the Malaysian Chicken Curry. APOO ordered a mini, I ordered a regular with a Coke, and IG ordered a regular and asked for water. When the price for IG's and mine were the same, he asked the cashier/cook why, and she said that he ordered water. IG started to ask why the water costed the same as the soda. I wanted him to stop arguing with the lady, because I read that when you upset the waitress, you will probably get your food spit in. And if she spit in his food, she might spit in my food too.
IG: Betty asked me if I wanted water, and I answered yes, thinking it would be a cup of water, but what I got was bottled water. That explained why the soda and wata both cost one dolla each! Betty was heating up some naan (Indian flat bread) in the frying pan and brought it to the seated customers. The naan look really good, and I wanted some, but Betty said, "No more, all gone." Bummer, I wanted naan!!
DMSC: Anyhow, the food was very good. APOO thought it was very spicy. I thought it wasn't too spicy. I was a little disappointed that there were no real vegetables to speak of, save for a few onions in the curry. Of course, the menu said "Malaysian Chicken Curry", so it WAS what it said.
APOO: DMSC just can't get enough of veggies. And yes, I thought the curry was really spicy but even the customer that sat next to us said it wasn't too spicy. I just have low tolerance.

IG: The Malasian chicken curry was delicious and not too spicy for me. One of Betty's regular customers came and asked if she had any coconut rice but she hadn't cooked any today but would be preparing some tomorrow. Bummer, no coconut rice today!
DMSC: The cashier/cook/owner lady was actually pretty nice. She was telling us that she was born in Hong Kong but grew up in Singapore and she speaks Cantonese.
IG: The GD was originally on Pauahi Street in Chinatown before moving to Kahala Mall. I remember eating at the GD in Chinatown and how delicious the food was, even though everything was in styrofoam containers. I was surprised at how small this restaurant was after moving from Kahala Mall where the rent was $10,000 a month!!
DMSC: After lunch, IG told us that he likes pickled pigs feet. I think he was trying to tell us something deeper. But maybe I don't want to know what he was trying to tell us.
IG: DMSC and APOO have been bugging me about my fetishes, so I told them about my feet fetish: pickled pig's feet, chicken feet, crow feet, toe jam, etc, etc. BUT noooo, that wasn't enough to satisfy their curiosity (hehehe). Stay tuned for more... (maybe!)
APOO: Wait a minute, pigs feet? I thought it was....nevermind. You see, IG is doing it again. He lures us into a conversation that he barely started and then ends it in the next sentence. How are we supposed to have a normal conversation like that. BTW, welcome back IG! You better not run away again and purposely forget your password :)

Bangkok Express

1627 Nuuanu Ave
Honolulu, HI
(808) 585-8839

DMSC: Today I had to pick up my kids early so I parked my car in the building. To save on meter money, we decided to take a drive out vs. our usual walk to Chinatown. Because I'm planning a party for a co-worker and was thinking about having Thai food, we went to check out Bangkok Chef.
IG: APOO really wanted to eat in downtown today so that she could stop by Ross afterwards to buy some more stuff for her new house. But she was a good sport and came along with us to BC.
APOO: I really wanted to buy a gigantic basket for my indoor money tree but I keep finding other things so I end up getting everything else but the basket! Grrr! Oh and I had been here before, this exact location too...and I only found out after I had been sitting there for sometime. Getting old, memory loss.

DMSC: This place is kinda cool. It's behind a big industrial aluminum roll up door like you'd see at a garage or something. The cashier was funny. When I took out a $100 bill, she called me the "sugar daddy". I told her I'm only the sugar daddy to my wife and kids. Later when APOO and I were talking back to each other, she asked if we were brother and sister. Finally, after we decided our food, she asked "is that going to be enough food for you three?" So we ordered spring rolls, much to APOO's request to order more food only if we were hungry.
IG: We did order a lot: spring rolls, mango salad, stir fry chicken, noodles and tapioca for dessert. But we wolfed everything down in such a hurry, and DMSC only remembered to take pics after we had eaten most of the food. There were no leftovers!
APOO: We DID have leftovers.  Nobody ate the raw veggies that came with the springs rolls and they are now sadly sitting in my refrigerator. And why did the guys listen to the waitress and ordered more food than we could eat? We were so stuffed!

DMSC: So here are the spring rolls. The funny thing is, APOO didn't want to order these but ended up eating the last ones.
IG: APOO ate TWO spring rolls (!) and wanted more of the chicken stir fry which we had finished off.
APOO: You guys finished that dish fast! I really wanted more but was a second too late. The chicken stir fry was delicious.

DMSC: This is the mango salad. It had a sweet chili dressing and cashews.
IG: The mango salad is similar to the Thai papaya salad but not as crunchy and not too spicy.
APOO: I love the dressing in this salad. It wasn't too spicy for a whimp like me and there were lots of mangoes.

DMSC: This dish was called Pad Bliao Waan, which was chicken with pineapple and onions. It was served with sticky rice.
APOO: The sticky rice was good but I think coconut sticky rice would've been a better match for this dish.

DMSC: This dish was IG's choice - it was Rad Nah - a wide egg noodle with chicken and broccoli with sweet soy sauce.
IG: I thought the noodles were look fun (rice noodles) which were too sweet for me. I should have ordered a different noodle dish...

DMSC: We also had tapioca, but as usual, we were in such a rush to eat it that we forgot to take pictures.
IG: The tapioca was yummy but you had to stir in the warm, sweet, coconut milk to mix it with the sticky pearl tapioca underneath. It was worth the trouble, and I finished mine before the others. OINK! OINK!
APOO: IG, you so did not beat me in finishing the tapioca. Remember I saved the container and had asked you to do so when you finish yours? I so beat all of you! And DMSC was so full he couldn't finish his tapioca!

Pho Tau Bay

APOO: "What the heck!" I thought when we saw this great big yellow sign. We wanted the old pho restaurant where we enjoyed the broth exceedingly the last time we came. We didn't walk all the way here (the farthest we would walk with a 45 minute lunch hour) to go to a new restaurant and try new food. We wanted the comfort of sitting at the same place and eating the same food because of what was and is still happening with the State (i.e., furlough). Well, we had no choice (because we were hungry) but to go in.

APOO: The menu looks exactly the same as the one at the old restaurant.

APOO: We were excited to see if the pho were as delicious as the ones from the old place. We thought if the broth was crappy, we don't have to come back here ever again! It is a far walk you know. [drum roll]... the broth was......great! Darn it, we have to come back here again. Next time I wear sneakers instead of slippas.
DMSC: The only weird thing was that they pre-boil the beansprouts so they're soggy when you get em.

APOO: The topic of discussion at this luncheon was furlough and the possibility of layoffs. It was depressing. What's more depressing was DMSC didn't get a free soda when he actually wanted one (note: take a look at the great big yellow sign).
DMSC: Actually, the order of the pictures is misleading. I actually took the pic of the banner in the front after we walked out, and realized that you get a free soda with purchase. Dang!

Mei Sum

65 N Pauahi St
Honolulu, HI 96817
(808) 531-3268

APOO: Stupid DMSC was too lazy to take pictures of the food! You can check out our March 25th blog for our Mei Sum rating. The food is always tasty here, but a little on the costly side. Considering what happened 3 minutes before we walked in the door, we didn't mind paying a little extra to be treated equally. Here's the story and I believe DMSC tells a better one...
DMSC: Stupid? Oh man, that's mean. I did take pictures. I just accidentally deleted them when I was clearing out my phone. Man, some people don't appreciate how long it takes to upload pics from your phone, post em up on Photobucket, link them on the blog, resize them...... Well, I guess it's better to recognize the lack of photos, rather than ignore the blog altogether (cough cough IG cough cough)
APOO: We had originally wanted to go dim sum at Happy Garden. If you remember, our past reviews of Happy Garden were good, we loved the food and especially the prices. Cheapo dim sum is always great. We walked in Happy Garden and not surprisingly, it was crowded. About 3 minutes later, a group of three walked in the restaurant. DMSC, IG and I were anxiously waiting for one of the tables to be cleaned because we had to eat quickly and get back to work. When the waitress was about done cleaning the table, the guy in the group of three that walked in after us just sat down at the table and the other two followed. IG said, "Ey ey! We were first." The lady said, "We called in our food and it's now cold." DMSC was mad and gently stormed out of the restaurant. Outside the restaurant, he told the people that were waiting what just happened. I believe some people left because of what we told them. Well, good! We were loyal customers and for them to treat us this way was unforgivable. We ended up at Mei Sum, which was a much better choice with better service. We got a table right away.
DMSC: I wasn't so much mad.... more mildly indignant at the whole situation. Anyway, it's a bad economy, and spending money somewhere else is a better form of protest, which is why I suggested not waiting there for a table.

Rosarina

1111 Maunakea St
Honolulu, HI 96817
(808) 533-6634

DMSC: Another little gem in Chinatown is Rosarina Pizza.
APOO: Hmmm...pizza or dim sum. It was a hard choice but since we (AP and IG) have never tried Rosarina before, or at least in downtown Honolulu, we decided to go Italian.
IG: I had a craving for pizza since I hadn't eaten pizza in over a year. DMSC wanted vegetables as usual. APOO wanted garlic bread. Sooo, we ordered all three: large pizza, antipasta salad, and garlic bread!

APOO: This is the their signature salad. If you judge this dish only by its look, you ain't gonna like it because to be honest, this salad looked really plain and unappetizing. However, the first bite will blow you away. The dressing is just to-die-for. I am a total meat person but I could eat this all day! The picture is kinda' blurry as DMSC took this picture at the very tail end of our luncheon when only 1/10 of the salad was left.
IG: The salad look fine with assorted cold cuts, lots of shaved parmesan cheese, lettuce and a light oil and vinegar dressing.

APOO: Someone said we won't have enough food - IG! - so we ordered garlic bread. Actually, I take the blame for this because I walked into the restaurant craving for garlic bread. Rosarina makes a mean garlic bread. It was super light and not oily at all. I ate quite a bit.
DMSC: I agree, the garlic bread was awesome.
IG: I think the garlic bread was baked in the same oven as the pizza and came out crisp and crunchy on both the top and bottom. YUMM!

APOO: Lastly, we have the combo pizza. We had two slices leftover but the pizza was deliciously cheesy. Was this the day we learned about the furlough? Not too sure but we had a great meal.
DMSC: I liked this pizza. The crust was very good, not too thin and not thick and greasy. We asked the waitress what size would be appropriate for us, and she thought the large would be about right. It was too much! Stupid us, for asking a waitress who probably wants to sell you the biggest thing possible.
IG: The pizza crust was great : not too doughy with a great buttery flavor but it did get a bit soggy from the toppings. I can't eat too much cheese and ended up pulling/scraping off most of my cheese topping which my tablemates noticed and remarked. DMSC and I finished our share of the large pizza. APOO didn't finish her share because she was too full (from the garlic bread!) and took home two slices of pizza.

Liberty Grill

1136 Union Mall
Honolulu, HI 96813
(808) 537-9192

DMSC: There's a certain style of "sit-down" restaurant that is reflective of the amalgamation of local culture. Liberty Grill is one of the last of it's kind - closed down restaurants like Kelly's by the airport, Colombia Inn, Victoria Inn were some of my favorites..... and then of course those few restaurants that have weathered changing times, namely Dot's and Likelike Drive Inn, as well as Kenny's and Liliha Bakery. And we won't mention that overpriced and not-so-good "Z" restaurant......
APOO: What is the "Z" restaurant? I think this is way before I moved to Hawaii. Anyway, I would like to take this opportunity to thank DMSC for keeping up with this blog. I haven't lost interest in this blog, or blogging at all. I actually have my own personal blog that I haven't been updating for the past 2 months. I blame everything that's been happening with work and with the State. ~sigh.
DMSC: I thought we weren't revealing that we're state employees. Well, now that THAT cat's out of the bag, I guess it's safe to say that we are considering renaming the blog "Where are we going for lunch on Thursday", since most Fridays we will be furloughed. And in fact, we're going to have to start being more economical on our lunches because we'll have 13.8% less pay in our paychecks, 20% less when you factor in the additional medical expenses..... but before I rant on too much, this is a FOOD blog...... oh yeah, so APOO, the "Z" restaurant is Zippy's. I thought that was pretty obvious. Anyway, back on topic - Zippy's WISHES it was Liberty Grill.
APOO: I only mentioned what has been happening with the State and in no way did I say we were State employees. You let the bigger cat out of the bag :)
DMSC: Liberty Grill is great because it's located right in the middle of downtown and it's one of the few places where you sit down for a nice served meal.

DMSC: They also have take out up front.
APOO: I remember the first time we went to this place, we were craving for Hawaiian food. Well, I was craving for Haupia which DMSC graciously offered his piece to me. THANK YOU! In case you haven't noticed, anyone who gives me haupia will make my day super delightful :)

DMSC: IG and I had a roast turkey plate.
APOO: Talk about someone losing interest...hint hint, IG! Where are you IG? I thought we were a team.
DMSC: He claims he forgot his password, but like lunchtime conversations, IG loses interest in things all the time.

APOO: Guess what I had? Spare-rib stew. This dish was so awful I finished it in 10 minutes. Aw, the juicy gravy coupled with the tender spare-ribs, so ono. Not to mention the white rice, which I am always a big fan of because since my fiance decided to switch to brown rice, I rarely eat white rice at home anymore. Stupid healthy diet! All hail white rice!

Lunch Room

DMSC: Today we had lunch in the lunch room. It is hella hot in the office. I think the admin has decided that they would save a lot of money if they turned the air conditioning off on us. Unfortunately, they feel like maybe the LUNCH ROOM (which is only used maybe 10% of the day) should be cold while the rest of the office should be like 84 degrees.

"IG": I still can't remember my password to this place.

DMSC: Thank you, APOO and IG, for keeping me company at lunchtime.

"IG": Let's see, what could my password be..... freezergau? stupidresidentmanager?

DMSC: My and APOO's lunch were home lunches, while IG had a frozen lunch. Obviously nothing worthy of photos.

"IG": ......acupuncturerules? rawfishsucks? ilovetendon?

Skippy's Coffee Shop

1385 Queen Emma St
Honolulu, HI 96813

(808) 531-2509

"IG":
If you see any of our names in quotation marks it's not really the person typing, it's one of the other two of us, pretending we are the person typing. The reason it's so easy to do this is because IG forgot his password to edit the blog! Ha ha ha!!
DMSC
: Today we all wanted to have pho, but lazy ole APOO didn't want to walk all the way across Chinatown. Every day I drive past this place on the way to my parking structure, so I suggested this place, though I've never eaten here before.
APOO: LAZY! You suggested this place before I became lazy :)

DMSC: This restaurant is located next door to Da Kine Bail Bonds, better known as A&E Channel's Dog The Bounty Hunter's office. Notice the sign - I'm glad they are reminding me to keep off the ice. Though with the warm tropical weather here, I'm not too worried about icy sidewalks (yes, that was a joke).
APOO: What? You didn't post the picture of you standing outside with a gangsta sign? Shame on you!
DMSC: I thought we had a pact not to put pics of ourselves on the blog. Okay, I guess you're giving me permission to put yours and IG's pics up! Thanks!

DMSC: At any self respecting vietnamese restaurant, you will get your beansprouts and other assorted weeds :) a full minute before your soup comes out.
"APOO": When the beansprouts come out I can't help but eat them before my soup comes out. Oh yeah, and DMSC is the greatest human being on earth.
"IG": Yes, I agree, DMSC is the greatest human being on earth.
"DMSC": I told APOO and IG that every day I drive past this place on the way to my parking structure and saw that it was crowded. There were only three customers at the store, including us. APOO will kill me!

DMSC: Next you mix your hoisin with various hot sauces.
"IG": I don't like hot sauce.
"APOO": I am afraid of hot sauce.
APOO: I have good reason to be scared of hot sauce - it gives me heartburn and heartburn hurts!

DMSC: Finally our soup came out. The noodles were a tad mushy. The broth had a slightly sweet taste. The meat, just cooked due to the broth heat, was tender and flavorful.
"APOO": I got a piece of meat stuck between my teeth and I started digging it out with my fingernails!!!
APOO: Oh darn, you saw that? Sorry, it was disgusting but that stupid piece of meat was bothering me. The food was bad for me. The noodles were mushy and the meat tasted weird, almost grainy. The broth was good though.

DMSC: Everything was fake here, including the flowers and birds.....

DMSC: ..... as well as the picture "frame", which was really just an illusion and printed onto the same paper as the artwork. Boy, if they tried to pull a fast one over on us about the frame, can you imagine what they must have done to our soup......

"DMSC": "I wonder how hard it would be to pretend to be an engineer?"
APOO: "How hard is it for you?"
"IG": "Look who's the smart ass now! In your face DMSC for always making fun of me."
APOO: The above conversation came about when DMSC suggested all three of us to get a white coat, name tag, and pretend to be doctors so we could eat free food at Queen's Hospital. There was an event at the hospital on our way to lunch and IG went straight to the smoky parking lot, hoping to get some food. I asked one of the guards there and he said the event was for employees only.

Fort Street Cafe

1152 Fort Street Mall
Honolulu, HI 96813
(808) 536-0455

DMSC: A late training class was the reason we all had lunch together today. We ran over to Fort Street Cafe, which is a little indoor/outdoor Vietnamese/Thai restaurant located a few doors down from HPU on Fort Street. We sat outside on the busy strip where college kids, business people and homeless people all peacefully coexist.
"APOO": Here is what I ate. It is garlic chicken and pad thai. DMSC rocks!
APOO: Hey, I am the real APOO and yes, DMSC does rock. For once, he is right about himself. Back to the food...I was craving for pad thai and garlic chicken, which was the reason why this dish rocks more than DMSC!

DMSC: I had a mixed plate consisting of garlic chicken, peanut chicken curry and brown rice. The garlic chicken is boneless skinless thighs deep fried, then dipped in a shoyu/sugar/garlic mixture. Unlike most local style garlic chicken, this one didn't have that thick syrupy coating. I actually prefer it this way. The peanut curry was good, mildly spicy but probably totally mild by Thai standards. There were bits of veggies inside and some nice basil. The brown rice is like a jasmine, and it's one of the better brown rices around.
APOO: The garlic chicken was ONO! I could eat this all day!...with the pad thai, eat all day! This garlic chicken reminded me of those at Sugoi, but less oily.

"IG": Here is my chicken curry. DMSC rocks!!
APOO: I tried some of IG's brown rice and it tasted super good! I hate hard brown rice, which happens when the brown rice hasn't been soaked before cooking.

"DMSC": BTW, I am a "santanist" and I can't stop talking about why I am "santanist" and then explaining why I am not a "santanist" but really an angry atheist, all in one long disconnected sentence. Oh, I can't stop talking about myself, blah blah blah, me me me.
THE REAL DMSC: Yes, APOO, sometimes the world revolves around someone OTHER than you.
APOO: We had an interesting conversation about religion and beliefs. The thing is, after all the talk, I still don't know what DMSC and IG believes in. Obviously DMSC is totally confused and IG never really expressed is true beliefs.
DMSC: IG can't even remember his password to update the blog, how do you expect him to share his beliefs?

Mini Garden

50 N Hotel St
Honolulu, HI
(808) 538-1273

DMSC: One of our favorite places to have good Chinese food is Mini Garden. The prices are reasonable and the food is good.

DMSC: Our first dish was chicken crispy noodles. This was okay. It didn't have that smokey wok taste though, which is what makes a good dish great.
APOO: I agree with DMSC on the dish being great, but even without the smokey wok taste. I absolutely love this dish, the juice and everything. I especially like the crispiness of the noodles.

DMSC: Next we had roast duck. This was really good!
"IG": I admire DMSC because he is such a great person and he is so smart!!
APOO: You see, DMSC had this crazy idea that I have lost interest in blogging on this blog. That is why he is writing stuff for IG and I. Well, I do kinda' think IG has lost interest but I haven't. I just had a crazy week with my kitchen drain not working. Do you know how inconvenient it gets when you don't have a functional kitchen drain? Instead of eating in, you have to eat out every day, even on days you are just too tired from work. In any case, I love this blog and I am not tired of blogging on our Friday lunches. Oh and I loved the roast duck.

DMSC: Finally we had Chinese okra. I have never had this before. It was steamed and topped with fried garlic. Now, how can you go wrong when something is topped with garlic? I mean, you could probably put garlic all over a mongoose and.... well, I still wouldn't eat it, but I'm sure it would make it better!! In any case, this dish was just okay.
APOO: At first, I didn't know what Chinese okra was until the waitress told me in Chinese. I really like this veggie - a little slimy but sweet. I think I would've enjoyed this dish a lot more without the garlic and just savor the natural and original taste of okra.

"APOO": DMSC is probably the funniest person I know, and he is so smart too. In fact, he is way smarter than I am. He is also a better cook. And a better photographer. And I bet he can make better cartoons than I can too.
"DMSC": Oh and I wanted to order 3 orders of gai lan but APOO and IG never disapproved of such crazy idea of ordering 3 of the same dish so I ended up not ordering any but getting Chinese okra, which I didn't even enjoy. Darn, I contradicted myself and I wasted my only chance of ordering gan lai x3 without APOO and IG making fun of me. Boo hoo :(
"IG": I love DMSC and APOO so much that I want to treat them to lunch every Friday!!

Lemongrass Cafe

83 N. King Street
Honolulu, HI 968??
Phone: (808) 851-7010

DMSC: A few weeks ago we walked by this place and Island Guy said we'd try it sometime.
APOO: We ended up walking in circles because none of us knew exactly where this place was. Good thing IG kinda remembered :)
DMSC: Funky! This place was part office, part retail shop, part restaurant. When you first walk in, to your immediate right there are people sitting at desks working on computers! The restaurant portion takes up about half of the space - a counter with food, and seating. There is only one plate per day, and you get what they serve you!!
APOO: When we saw the menu, we were like, "Six bucks for everything on the buffet menu? What are we waiting for!" I sort of expected a bigger plate but we only got one serving of each buffet item. Still good still good. The chicken came with a separate peanut sauce and of course I opted out. Following DMSC's lead, I put chili fish sauce on my plate plus more...and more. IG did the same but not too much. After we took our first bite, DMSC and I were gasping for water. "Dang, the chili sauce is so hot!" we both said. I felt a major heart burn coming. IG was still his normal self because he wasn't stupid enough to ignore the chili part of chili fish sauce.
APOO: Everything tasted great. I especially loved the beef curry. I am guessing that DMSC and IG liked the satay chicken with peanut sauce because they ate it really fast. The cold vegetables were refreshing, especially with the chili fish sauce exploding in your mouth.
APOO: Since the plate was on the small size for big eaters like us, we decided to get the red tapioca dessert. We all thought it was small (AGAIN) and different. The sweetness was pure coconut sauce, unlike the Chinese style tapioca pudding that has sweetness from rock sugar. They also put ice in this red tapioca dessert which I thought was unnecessary because I would rather eat it chilled.
APOO: DMSC took a lot of random pictures of the place. One of the walls was all brick, giving the place an antique old-stylish look.
APOO: Near the front of the shop was a display of ceramic, food, and other Hawaiian collectables for sale. Since they were all one of a kind, the price tag was super high.

APOO: I gave this restaurant a 4 because the place looked interesting and that the food was great. The red tapioca dessert was just a 3 for me.

Indigo

1121 Nuuanu Ave.
Honolulu, HI 96817
(808) 521-2900

DMSC: Today we celebrated APOO's birthday, which was on Tuesday. We asked her where she wanted to go. Immediately she responded "Ken Fong!!". Not wanting to have any insect larvae in our food, we instead opted for Indigo, which is sort of our defacto special occassion place.
APOO: Once again, we went on a Thursday because DMSC had a commitment on Friday. I think we really should think of another name for this blog. I guess when our lives become normal again, our Friday lunches will be more consistent. But I do thank everyone for celebrating my birthday. I know I have no right to complain about getting older since I am the youngest in the group, but getting closer to 30 really sucks!
APOO: I have only been to this place once and that was when Elise from our work decided to leave us FOREVER! I may be exaggerating a tiny bit but she did leave to work somewhere else. Oh and did I mention, our fourth lunch co-hort, who stopped having lunch with the group because his life was cut short by a bizarre gardening accident, sprung back to life and came to lunch with us? Wow, I felt special to be eating with a zombie.
APOO: One of the reasons I like Indigo is their food selection. The buffet table is COLORFUL! However, unlike the typical buffet, there are servers to put food on your plate so you can't control the size of each portion, which DMSC doesn't like. We all ended up with huge plates with huge portions of everything and those that we didn't want, and we had to force ourselves to stuff our faces until our tummies explode. Luckily, the food was healthy.
APOO: Here's a sample plate. Since I am no Indian, I have no clue what I ate except the general terms like fish, noodles, mushrooms, tomatoes, fried wonton skin, and salad. Oh oh I know, I ate humus too and that bread that goes with it. Ok, maybe DMSC and IG can help me out with the name of each dish.

DMSC: This stuff isn't Indian, APOO. It's eurasian, with the Mediterranean elements (humus and pita and pizza) alongside the asian influence (tofu, pancit noodles, chicken with thai peanut sauce). Lots of veggies too, which I LOVE!
APOO: I believe we all liked the food and were super full. I also like the conversation we had, with all that "smart-a$$" talk between DMSC and IG. And our zombie's story of "A Rat's Blood", ooooooo, exhilarating! Thank you all for celebrating with me :)

DMSC: Sorry, the zombie brings out the smart-a$$ in me.
